Creating Content: The Three Biggest Mistakes

Jeff, you’ve been creating content, and you’ve been teaching people how to create content for many years. What are the biggest problems that you see that people have creating content?

Jeff: It’s like a lot of other things, Alun. People make it bigger and more difficult than it is. It does take work. It’s not – do this once, and you’re set for life. Do this consistently, and you’re set for life. It’s getting started.

One of the things people complain about is they don’t know what to create, they don’t know how to get started. The easiest way to get started is to think of a topic in your niche. Come up with three mistakes that people typically make. All of us can do that. Even people that may not think they are big experts can do this.

You name those three mistakes, but don’t stop there. Anybody can name mistakes. Anybody can be a critic. Talk about what to do instead – one little tip for what you do instead. I call that the Goldilocks’s zone, because some people do too little, some people do too much. Three mistakes, three things, and one piece of content that is just right the Goldilocks’s zone. What that does for beginners and even seasoned veterans is it really shows off your expertise in a way that is larger than just saying, “Hey, I’m a big expert!” If you can name the mistakes and what you do instead, obviously, you know what you are talking about.

Alun: Yes, indeed.
